"PIPER"
If there is a special place in Heaven for the best of the best Hunting Dogs, Companions and Wonderful Family Dogs, you will be at the head of them all.
We had such a short time together, only three years. But, In that three years she was the best of the best of all the Labradors I have ever had. She had the Temperament of a loving child and the Heart and Drive of a Lioness. I truly believe she was so intelligent that she knew what you wanted her to do, even before you uttered a word.
She would make impossible retrieves on a routine basis, in the marsh. If a bird was dropped in heavy cattail cover, she used that wonderful nose of hers and would complete the retrieve when you would swear, all was lost.
In the field, she was an absolute pheasant hunting machine. She pointed with style, even on Grouse and flushed those scrambling ringnecks when they just would not hold. She knew when a bird was hit, even if we didn't and would make retrieves of almost a quarter mile in the field.
She was just an absolute lover and was lavished with praise and love. She was the protector of your youngest grand daughter and would stay at her side, not letting harm come to her. When our grand daughter would sit on her back, while laying down, she would patiently lay there keeping vigil as her guardian.
We were so lucky to have her in our lives. I still cry a little when I think about her. She was taken away by complications from surgery for an intestinal twist. We just did not have enough time with her but I think maybe the man upstairs needed her more than I. Some day, I hope to hunt with her again in those marshes and fields that never run out of game.
Rest In Peace Piper! You will forever be in our hearts, souls, and thoughts every day. Piper, we will forever miss you and your gentle ways.
